Species at Risk
Wildlife species that are extirpated, endangered, threatened or of special concern fall under species at risk. The Government of Canada classifies the status of species with both the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and the Species at Risk Act (SARA).
Each species has their role in the ecosystem and species diversity is essential for healthy environments. Imagine if the honeybee, a primary pollinator, became extinct. The fruits and vegetables we eat could be next. Coastal Action works with threatened and endangered species, as well as species of special concern, to help ecosystems remain diverse. We are currently working towards recovering the endangered Atlantic whitefish and tracking the population of the American eel.
